Richmond Bridge was closed off this evening as the emergency services dealt with a major incident.

People on the scene reported that the police, ambulance and other services were responding to reports that someone had jumped from the bridge.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called by London Ambulance Services at 7.18pm to Bridge Street, Richmond, after a man was reported to have fallen from height from Richmond Bridge.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services the man, believed aged in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Police are working to confirm his identity and inform next of kin.

"The death is being treated as unexpected, though initial enquiries suggest it is not suspicious.

"Richmond Bridge is closed in both directions and alternative routes should be used."

Buses and cars were diverted on the route which is the major artery connecting Richmond to Twickenham.

Police sources said the man fell on to the riverside promenade rather than in to the river.

"Sadly the person died at the scene."
