The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for Twickenham and surrounding areas this afternoon.

Thunder and lightning can be expected at 5pm and will last for 2 hours, according to the latest forecast.

This comes a day after the Met office issued its first ever Extreme Heat warnings in parts of the UK.

The yellow warning means that the storm could cause flooding, affect power supplies and disrupt transport.

Specifically, the following can be expected:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

Many have been out and about enjoying the weather in Twickenham and taking a dip in the river.

The Office issued an 'Amber - Be Prepared' weather warning for South Wales, the West Midlands, South West England and areas in Hampshire as temperatures are expected to climb to 33 degrees in parts of Britain and remain in the high 20s and low 30s for other areas - including Twickenham.

Tonight's storms may provide a welcome cool-off for some but remember to stay safe.
