New Home Bargains store opening in Twickenham!

By The Editor 13th Aug 2021

Home Bargains is opening a new store in Twickenham this weekend.

The retailer says it has invested around £1million in its new store in Ivybridge Retail Park, which used to be home to Currys PC World.

It will officially open at 8am on Saturday (February 20) and will sell homewares, health and beauty essentials, sweets, snacks and a variety of fresh and frozen food.

It will create 64 new jobs in the local community, and will bring some staff and management over from other local stores.

Home Bargains has said it will also be donating £2,000 to the local charity Hands, which offers help to older people and isolated people in Twickenham and St Margaret's.

The charity was started in 1977 by Twickenham resident Maureen Payan, and stands for Help a Neighbour in Distress Scheme.

Maurice Austen, treasurer at Hands, said: "This generous donation from Home Bargains is a significant one for the charity and will help us meet some of the day-to-day costs of running the charity. We have no regular source of income and use our accumulated reserves year on year to fund our work and the shortfall in annual income.

"If not for the current pandemic, we would be arranging outings, social events, a bi-weekly shopping bus, holding a regular Sunday lunch club, helping clients get to appointments, running a befriending service for the lonely and organising an annual 'Hands May Fair'.

"Work during lockdown has been restricted to a telephone befriending services, which currently averages between 40 and 50 calls a week, and shopping for individual clients – we have done over £35,000 worth of shopping, which is about 1,700 individual shops.

"Our volunteers are amazing individuals who step up to the challenge whatever it is and whenever asked."
