A new vision for economic growth across South London has been unveiled, setting out ambitious plans to drive innovation, attract investment, and expand access to well-paid, secure jobs.

Launched yesterday (17 June) in Wimbledon by the South London Partnership (SLP) — which represents the boroughs of Croydon, Kingston, Merton, Richmond, and Sutton — the BIG Ambition: South London Growth vision outlines a roadmap for long-term, locally driven development.

The plan aims to build on South London's strengths in health and life sciences, creative and digital industries, environmental innovation, and advanced manufacturing, while calling for increased devolution and targeted investment to accelerate progress.

Chair of the South London Partnership and Leader of Richmond Council, Councillor Gareth Roberts, said: "Our sub region is already a £38 billion economy, home to more than 1.2 million residents, 55,000 businesses and 550,000 jobs.

"This statement showcases South London's vital role in generating polycentric growth and the bold ambition that all the South London Partnership leaders share for our places. Growth can't just be for the few — we want it to be inclusive, sustainable and built from the ground up."

Key priorities outlined in the new vision include:

  • Boosting innovation and productivity by strengthening ties between businesses and universities
  • Creating high-quality jobs in emerging sectors like life sciences, green tech, and digital media
  • Upgrading transport and digital infrastructure, with a particular focus on orbital connections and full-fibre broadband
  • Helping more people into work by improving the integration of skills, health, and employment support services
  • Promoting South London as a prime destination for inward investment, enterprise and culture

The launch event was attended by London's Deputy Mayor for Business, Howard Dawber, who welcomed the shared commitment to growth.

He said: "Following the launch of the London Growth Plan earlier this year, I welcome the South London Partnership's Growth Ambition which sets out a vision that reflects the real strengths of South London – its talent, innovation and potential."

CEO of London & Partners, Laura Citron, also praised the plan's forward-thinking approach.

"From advancing global centres of innovation like the London Cancer Hub in Sutton, to producing skilled graduates from six universities, South London has a vital role in shaping London's future," she commented.

The South London Partnership is now calling on Government and private investors to match its ambition — by backing major infrastructure projects, investing in people and skills, and supporting homegrown innovation.

Cllr Roberts continued: "We have a clear vision, we have partners — now we need the backing to make it happen.

"This is South London's moment. With world-class institutions, a diverse and skilled population, and a strong local economy, we are already at the forefront of innovation, enterprise and sustainable growth."
