Parents have raised concerns over a dangerous crossing near to St Stephens C of E primary school in St Margarets.  

The parents claim that the lights at the crossing, at the westbound exit of the A316 St Margaret's Roundabout, are out of sync, meaning that pedestrians often get stuck at the middle point of the crossing. 

There are new calls for concern following a road traffic accident that took place on 15 January 2024 where a car crashed through the pedestrian island. 

Naomi Armstrong, who is a parent at St Stephens CofE primary school said: "This happened on a Sunday.  

"If this was a school day, large groups of parents and children would have been crossing.  

"At the best of times, this crossing is dangerous with large groups of pedestrians stranded in the middle at peak school and commuter times.  

"The incident proves that the barriers are useless and that it's a death trap waiting to happen." 

She added that the school and parents have made multiple complaints over the years to TFL (who oversee the crossing) and so far nothing has been done.  

Naomi said: "It means that once again we're left feeling vulnerable at our local crossing.

"The temporary plastic barriers are hardly worth being there and will serve no purpose if another crash occurs before they're fixed".

She added: "I really think this should be actioned immediately now that this accident has proved that this crossing is a death trap". 

The parents would like to see things such as school signs and cameras installed in the area, as well as an increase in time to cross the crossing.  

Naomi also explained that whilst there is a footbridge in place that people could use to cross the road, it is not practical for those with buggies, scooters, or bikes. 

TFL have been contacted for comment but have not yet replied.
