'Please wear a mask' - Theatres ask audiences to protect themselves and others this panto season

The boos, hisses, laughs and audience banter typical of the Christmas panto may be a little muffled this year – or even off limits.

Families across the area are looking forward to the festive shows at Richmond Theatre, where Anton Du Beke stars in Cinderella, and The Exchange, which is producing Aladdin.

However, the theatres have made clear that, following the emergence of the new Omicron strain of Covid, they would like the audiences to wear masks.

New rules came into effect earlier this week that legally require masks in shops and on public transport.

This law does not extend to theatres and cinemas, however a number of venues have asked visitors to wear masks by way of an extra courtesy and level of protection.

Given the venues can only politely ask people to wear a mask, the situation creates a risk of confrontation between audience members, not least because a minority of people are vehemently opposed.

Government ministers and scientific advisers have created confusion in recent days over whether Christmas parties can go ahead and, if they do, what precautions should be applied.

A lack of clear legal rules for theatres means that each venue is adopting its own policy. For example, some insist that audiences provide proof they are vaccinated or infection-free, while others do not.

Richmond Theatre asks all guests over 18 to provide proof of their vaccination status or the results of a recent Covid test. The details of requirements can be found here.

On masks, a spokesman said: "In line with government guidance, whilst masks are not compulsory, we do encourage them."

The Exchange does not ask for proof of vaccination or a recent test. Its advice can be found here.

The venue asks visitors and staff:

  • To be mindful of others who may not yet feel comfortable with the relaxing of restrictions.
  • Give people space where possible and when moving about the venue
  • Wear face coverings when you are moving around the building or seated in the theatre.
  • Wash or sanitise your hands regularly.

Venue manager, Catherine Graham, said: "In light of recent government requirements and the increase in covid cases we are asking all audiences to wear a face covering inside our venue unless exempt."

The Orange Tree Theatre does not include a requirement on vaccination status, but it says the wearing of masks is 'mandatory' unless people are exempt. Details can be found here.
