Police bring in cameras to tackle menace of drunk teens

By Rory Poulter 19th Mar 2022

The police and Council chiefs are stepping up action to tackle antisocial behaviour around Twickenham Green.

Residents are complaining that up to 100 youngsters are gathering at weekends and filling up on booze bought illegally from stores in the area.

Police and Council officials say they are aware of the issues and have pledged to take action.

One resident who has lived near the Green for three years said: "Recently there has been an influx of teenagers - over a hundred loitering around on the Green and Sainsbury's.

"Now I don't care if kids hang around, they've got to go somewhere, but what does bother me is how they knock and run at my door every Friday and are extremely loud and drunk.

"I came back from the cinema last week and it was a disgrace how many kids were so p****. They'd been sick on themselves and passed out on the benches."

There have been similar issues around Richmond Green in recent years. The situation was so bad that, at one stage, residents considered bringing in a private police force to run patrols.

The police have taken action to crack down on sales of alcohol to teens in the area. And they are now pledging to bring in camera systems to monitor the area and deter antisocial behaviour.

The Hampton News and Booze shop, which is near the Green, had its licence revoked earlier this year after the police found it was selling to children.

A Police spokesman told Nub News: "Police are aware of resident concerns about anti-social behaviour on Twickenham Green reported to us.

'Our dedicated ward officers and PCSOs have been tasked to regularly patrol the area, and police licensing teams are working closely with trading standards to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors.

"We are also working closely with our partners in the area, and have arranged to increase camera coverage of the green.

"If you have any concerns please contact your local policing teams.

"If you are concerned about an ongoing non-emergency incident you can contact police on 101, or online on our website or to @metcc on twitter. Reporting online goes through the same team as 101, and is dealt with in the same way."

Council chiefs said they are trying to stop sales of drink to teens. It is also setting up its own Parkguard security patrols.

A spokesperson said: "The Council and Police licensing teams and trading standards officers have been actively engaging with local businesses to ensure alcohol is not being sold to underage young people.

"Parkguard continue to work closely with the police and other agencies in providing regular patrols of Twickenham Green."
