Richmond College students join support effort for Ukraine's refugees

A bake sale held by students and staff Richmond College (RuTC) has raised nearly £200 in support of Ukraine's refugees.

The college has been supporting the efforts of the team at the Prosperity Café, in York Street, who have been collecting donations of emergency aid and cash.

Owners Galyna Kosyn'ka and her partner Alex Yarema have had to cease trading in order to work full time as volunteers to organise the collection, which is then driven to a junction just off the M25 where larger trucks take the goods to the border of Ukraine through a safe corridor in Poland.

Just today, UN officials said the need for humanitarian aid is increasing exponentially given the scale of exodus from the war zone.

As well as money, RuTC has also donated a large amount of clothes, female hygiene products, long-life food, bathroom products and more to the Cafe.

The latest list of items needed for the relief effort includes laundry washing powder and gel, as well as medicines, baby food, baby formula, dried food and new duvets.

More than 70 volunteers and many other schools, sports clubs, community groups and businesses have also joined the effort.

Rachel Scarborough, Head of Student Experience at RuTC is pleased to see how effectively RuTC students have responded to the call for aid, saying: "During times of challenge, it is heart-warming to know that the college community comes together to support those in need."

The College will continue to collect donations over the next week specifically for Ukraine and intends to make donations to other causes going forward.

So far this year RuTc have made donations to Refuge, Red Cross, CentrePoint, Young Minds, Salvation Army, Save the Children and First Star UK.
