A decision on whether to pedestrianise Church Street permanently will be made next week.

And the public is heavily in favour of keeping the current car-free arragement, according to the results of a consultation.

Twickenham Riverside Cllr James Chard said: "Very large and clear response on Church Street - 95% agreeing the covid-related pedestrianisation trial worked well, 94% saying make it permanent.

"We're aware opinion more divided (but still in favour) among residents in immediate vicinity and some traders.

"We'll work with officers on issues such as servicing, disabled access, and routes during flooding. Strong overall support doesn't mean ignoring those points."

Mr Chard said the decision will be made at a meeting of Richmond Council's Transport and Air Quality Committee on Thursday (March 18).

Church Street was pedestrianised in June to make social distancing easier.

The committee's chair Cllr Alexander Ehmann appears to be in favour of keeping it this way, saying in October: "We've had such a positive response to the pedestrianisation of Church Street.

"The charm of the space has been enhanced with the reduction in noise and with the provision of space to amble and best of all in a socially distanced manner."
