TWICKENHAM: Richmond Borough has highest infection rate in London
Richmond borough now has the highest Covid infection rates in the city.
Richmond has the highest Covid infection rate in the capital (295 per 100,000 of the population).
However, its figures are much lower than the highest UK area, Kettering, with 1,010.7.
This means around one in 100 Kettering people have the virus, according to government data.
The top 10 highest London borough infection rates as of September 24 are: Richmond, Hounslow, Hillingdon, Merton, Kingston, Barnet, Harrow, Sutton, Wandsworth and Ealing.
But all London boroughs are still below England's average infection rate of 330.
Over the last two weeks, Richmond has seen an increase in cases with 98 recorded yesterday (September 29), taking the total to 19,034 since the pandemic started.
Deaths in the borough have stayed lower than the peak with none recorded on September 29, leaving the total since the pandemic began at 296.
A spokesperson from Richmond Council said: "There is no specific reason or event that we can identify as the reason the numbers have increased."
Cllr Gareth Roberts, leader of Richmond Council, said: "It is of course concerning that the numbers of Covid-19 cases in Richmond are high, with residents still needing hospital care.
"It is a sobering reminder that the virus has not gone away, and people need to continue to take measures to keep themselves safe and those around them.
"However, whilst Richmond levels are high – they are considerably lower than the UK rate."
He added: "We would therefore ask local people – whilst we are all so desperate to move on from the pandemic, as we head into winter it is so essential that we protect ourselves, the NHS and local businesses by remembering hands, face, space and ventilate.
"Also – please have the vaccine and remember to self-isolate if you are displaying symptoms and take a test."
