Cycling group that has raised over £1 million for children in care seeks new members

A local cycling fundraising group is encouraging new members to join ahead of its 25th anniversary.
Started 25 years ago by Twickenham resident and social worker, Gill Timmis, Biking for Children in Care (BfCiC), has undertaken an annual 200-mile bike ride to raise funds for Become, the national charity for children in care and young care leavers.
The 60-strong group of cyclists and support volunteers have raised over £1m and earned Timmis an MBE.
She said: "Our core group is from Twickenham and surrounding areas but we have people of all ages, from 16 to 79, coming from all over, even from Ayrshire and Cornwall.
"We keep doing it because it's a hoot. We are a friendly, well organised bunch and we are always looking for new people to join us."
This year the 200-mile, four day guided event will take place from 25 to 29 June and follow a spectacular route from Lincoln to York, taking in Hull and Scarborough on the way.
All accommodation, food en route and some evening meals are organised beforehand.
"I'm a social worker and I have seen how hard it is for a young person to be looked after by the State," Timmis added.
"Become is a small charity that punches above its weight in terms of the support it provides for young people who are out there trying to cope without family around them.
"This is a fun way to raise much-needed funds for them. We have 30-odd mile practice rides planned in April, May and early June, starting from Twickenham, so people can see how it all works. Try us out! It would be great to meet you."
