Twickenham veterinary practice warns of heat risks for pets
By Nub News Reporter 13th Jul 2026
With warmer weather arriving across south west London, a local veterinary practice is urging pet owners to take extra care to keep their dogs safe in the heat.
Creature Comforts has shared advice on how to prevent heat-related illnesses, warning that heatstroke can develop quickly and become life-threatening if dogs are exercised during the hottest parts of the day.
Dr Poli Stamenova, one of the Head Vets at Creature Comforts, told Nub News: "As veterinary professionals, we see first-hand the serious effects that hot weather can have on dogs.
"Heatstroke can develop rapidly and become life-threatening, while hot pavements can cause painful burns to paws.
"During periods of warm weather, we encourage owners to walk their dogs very early in the morning, later in the evening or in the peaks of the heatwave, not at all.
"Please prioritise shade, rest and access to fresh water. A missed walk is far safer than a preventable emergency."
Dogs are unable to cool themselves as efficiently as humans, making them particularly vulnerable during periods of hot weather.
Older dogs, puppies, overweight pets and breeds with flat faces, such as pugs and bulldogs, can be at even greater risk.
As well as avoiding walks during the hottest part of the day, owners are advised to ensure pets always have access to fresh drinking water and shaded areas.
Hot pavements can also become hot enough to burn paws, so it is worth checking the surface with the back of your hand before heading out.
Veterinary experts also remind owners never to leave a dog inside a parked car, even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise dangerously quickly.
Signs of heatstroke include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, collapse and confusion. Anyone who suspects their pet is suffering from heatstroke should move them somewhere cool, offer small amounts of water and contact a vet immediately.
Creature Comforts Twickenham says the safest approach during a heatwave is to adjust daily routines and remember that skipping a walk is far better than risking a medical emergency.
