The Queen and her Richmond Brooch

The Richmond Brooch, gifted to the Royal family by the people of Richmond, was particularly important to the Queen.

Most recently, it was the single piece of jewellery that she wore as she sat alone in the pews of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle for the funeral of Prince Philip.

However, it also featured on many happy occasions also, most notably the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The Richmond Brooch is set in silver and gold and includes a spectacular array of diamonds alongside two pearls - a large round centre pear and detachable pear-shaped pearl drop.

It was one of many pieces that she inherited after her grandmother, Queen Mary, who passed away in 1953.

It was given to Princess Mary of Teck as a wedding present when, at the age of 26, when she married Prince George in July 1893.

The brooch was crafted by the Bond Street firm Hunt & Roskell, which held a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria.

Queen Mary had a strong affiliation with Richmond as her family lived for many years at White Lodge in Richmond Park, which later became the home of the Royal Ballet School.

The brooch was reportedly a favourite of Queen Mary's, who loved not only its size but also its versatility.

Queen Mary often wore the brooch with and without its pendant, sometimes placing the pendant alone in her hair or on the Lover's Knot Tiara she commissioned in 1913.

She also often chose to wear the brooch as part of other jewels, for example at the splashy Devonshire House Ball of 1897.

The Queen's parents, the then Duke of York and his new bride, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, lived at White Lodge when they first married. And when the Queen was born in 1926, her birth certificate gave White Lodge as her parents' home address.

The Queen was seen wearing the Richmond Brooch on many public occasions in later life.

Against her black dress coat at the funeral of Prince Philip, TV viewers also couldn't help but notice the oversized brooch just below the queen's left shoulder.

The Queen wore the brooch for a meeting with Pope John Paul II in October 2000 and later at several of the Festival of Remembrance concerts, which honours the military and all victims of war and conflict, at the Royal Albert Hall.

More recently, she included the Richmond Brooch, without pendant, on the lime-hued coat she wore to the May 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle.
