Victories for Ted Lasso – boss of AFC Richmond – at the Emmy awards

The hit US comedy Ted Lasso, based in Richmond, has claimed a host of awards at the prestigious Emmy awards overnight.

And in second victory for local talent, actor Matthew Macfadyen, who is a long-time Twickenham resident, won a global award for his role in the TV drama, Succession.

Ted Lasso, which stars Jason Sudeikis as a US coach who comes to the UK to manage fictional AFC Richmond, has been a hit around the world for Apple's TV streaming service.

For the second year in a row, it claimed an Emmy Outstanding Comedy series.

The show also took home the statuette for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Sudeikis, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Brett Goldstein, and Outstanding Directing for the episode "No Weddings and a Funeral" for MJ Delaney.

Speaking at the event, Jason Sudeikis, who is the also the executive producer, said: "This show is about good and evil. This show is about the truth and lies.

"This show is about all that stuff but it's mostly about our response to those things. And your response to our show has been overwhelming."

He added: "Thanks to the people who watch this show and dig it as much as we dig making it."

The show has put Richmond on the tourist map with visitors from around the world keen to see the many local landmarks that feature in the show, particularly around Richmond Green and the Riverside.

At the same time, many members of the cast have spoken of their love for the area and have become members of the Richmond family.

Such is the show's popularity that a walking tour of Ted Lasso locations been established by a locally based actress.

The cast and crew have been filming the long-awaited third series of Ted Lasso in recent weeks. Initially, it was always the intention that this series would be the last, however, such is the show's success and popularity, there is huge demand from fans – and Apple – for more.

Succession is the American drama that features a dysfunctional family at the head of a global news and media empire.

A delighted Matthew Macfadyen, who plays Tom Wambsgans, was joined at the event by wife, Keeley Hawes, who has herself claimed many TV and film awards.

Speaking of his win, he said: "Golly okay thank you so much, to the television academy I'm deeply flattered and thrilled to bits I must say it really is such a pleasure and a privilege for me to play this bonkers gift of a role in this wonderful show."
