The two Lib-Dem MPs for Twickenham and Richmond say the nation can 'breathe a sigh of relief' after Boris Johnson finally quit today against a background of lies and a mass exodus of ministers.

The MP for Twickenham, Munira Wilson, said: "The whole country can breathe a sigh of relief as Boris Johnson's hand is forced and he finally agrees to go. But this is by no means the end of it.

"The mass resignations have led to total chaos right across government, with not ONE single minister in the Education Department.

"The Conservatives have lost all credibility by propping up the Prime Minister for so long. It has been shameful to see Conservative MPs stand loyally by Boris Johnson through years of scandals and lies, and it's clear they only acted at the very last minute to save their own skin.

"Britain needs change and real leadership to deal with the cost of living crisis and record NHS waiting times. Only then can we restore trust in our political system and ensure the stability of our country. But the Conservative party have proven they are not up to the job."

The Richmond Park MP, Sarah Olney, said: "Boris Johnson has thrown the nation into chaos.

"His desperate bid to cling onto power over the last 36 hours has crippled the Government, broken the public's trust, and embarrassed the UK on the world stage."

She added: "The country is fed up with the Conservative party, and tired of being taken for granted. We are facing a catastrophic cost of living crisis and Tory infighting must not decide who will lead us through it."

Sarah Olney, Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park has dubbed the last 36 hours an "omnishambles".

This follows the resignation of over 50 Government Ministers, before Boris Johnson finally announced he would step down.

Responding to events, Olney said:

"The last 36 hours has been a catastrophic omnishambles. With Johnson gone, and the Government replaced en mass, trust in the Conservative party has evaporated.

"Boris Johnson has thrown the nation into chaos. His desperate bid to cling onto power has decapitated the Government, broken the public's trust, and embarrassed the UK on the world stage.

"It has been shameful to see Conservative MPs in London stand loyally by Boris Johnson through years of scandals and lies. It is clear they only acted at the very last minute to save their own skin.

"Local people tell me they will never forgive Conservative MPs for standing by Boris Johnson for so long.

"Conservative MPs have voted through unfair tax hikes on working families, in favour of water companies being allowed to pump sewage into our rivers and supported the scrapping of triple-lock pensions. It is these MPs, not just Boris Johnson, who have done unspeakable damage to our country.

"Britain needs change and real leadership to deal with the cost of living crisis and record NHS waiting times. The Conservative party have proven they are not up to the job."

The Lib-Dem leader and Kingston MP, Ed Davey, said: "It has always been clear that Boris Johnson is unfit to lead our country. The public won't forgive the Conservatives for propping him up for so long.

"Conservative MPs have spent months defending Boris Johnson instead of focusing on the cost-of-living crisis and the crisis in our NHS.

"Across the country, lifelong Conservative voters are fed up with being taken for granted. Johnson or no Johnson, trust in the Conservative party has gone and it will not be coming back."
