Disruption to rail journeys across south west London on Wednesday morning was caused by a piece of maintenance equipment belonging to Network Rail obstructing the line.

Thousands of people using South Western Rail (SWR) services , including workers and children on the way to school, were left stranded on platforms during the morning peak.

Some services were cancelled and others were delayed for up to 50minutes with problems, which were caused by the obstruction between Whitton and Twickenham, lasting through until 11am.

Neither Network Rail or SWR would explain what the equipment was or why it took so long to resolve the situation. However, it is known that an investigation has been launched by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "We're sorry to passengers affected by delays this morning owing to a piece of maintenance equipment obstructing the line between Whitton and Twickenham.

"The lines re-opened shortly after 08:00, with disruption lasting until 11:00. Safety is our top priority and we will work with the Rail Accident Investigation Branch on their report of the incident."
