Twickenham filmed Ted Lasso wins big in global TV awards

Richmond has become a star on the world TV stage overnight – thanks to Ted Lasso.

The Apple TV+ series, which is about an American football coach who switches code and becomes the manager of fictional football team AFC Richmond, has become a global phenomenon.

And the production crew have become familiar faces over the last three years on the streets around Richmond and Twickenham, who were able to carry on even during the pandemic.

Teams from the show have been seen filming in Church Street and on the riverside in Twickenham, as well as the Gaucho's restaurant on the riverside in Richmond, Richmond Theatre and the Prince's Head pub, on Richmond Green.

The show collected four awards at the prestigious Emmys overnight, including best comedy and acting gongs for British actors Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein, and its star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis.

Sudeikis has used his platform on the series to talk about issues close to his heart. Earlier this year, he joined people across football and beyond to offer their backing to England's Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, who were subject to racist abuse following England's loss in the final of the Euros.

The star turned up to the premiere of the second series of Ted Lasso in a shirt carrying the players' names.

Richmond has been the backdrop for some of the biggest award-winning productions of recent years, from Fleabag to Bridgerton.

Richmond Council has worked to ensure the borough's "huge" popularity is put to good use by asking production companies who film in the borough to contribute to local good causes.

Over the past three years (2018-2020) these donations have raised in excess of £85,000 for local charities and groups.

During this same period Richmond upon Thames has seen a combined total of 830 days of filming.

The borough has been used for numerous films and TV dramas, including: Finding Alice (ITV); Bridgerton (Netflix); Ted Lasso (Apple TV+); The Bodyguard (BBC); Fleabag (BBC Three/Amazon Studios); and Peter Rabbit 2 (Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation).
