A Twickenham resident is preparing to climb a 6,476m mountain in Asia to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In November Greg Attwood will be climbing Mera Peak in the Nepalese Himalaya to raise awareness for the battle against brain tumours in collaboration with Macmillan Cancer Support.

Greg, who has lived in the Borough for 21 years, lost his sister Jo to a cancerous brain tumour that progressed incredibly quickly following diagnosis last year.

In memory of his sister, he has partnered with the charity to raise money, awareness and support for people "facing the challenges" of cancer.

Greg explains: "When someone you love has a brain tumor, every day becomes a mix of hope and fear, strength and worry.

"The challenges are invisible to most, but so real to those going through it.

"I hope that by raising awareness, people know that they are not alone, that there's support, and that every bit of understanding helps lighten the load for families and friends."

The expedition will last three weeks and includes acclimatisation, with base camp at an altitude of 5,300m.

Greg says the biggest challenge will be managing the effects of altitude on his body, although he has spent the last few months "training and preparing to take on the challenge, in the same fashion as my sister Jo who lived with adventure".

The campaign titled, Climbing for Jo, is hoping to raise donations in the coming months, before and after the expedition to support families who need help most.

Greg adds: "My beloved sister Jo faced her challenges extremely well and we are incredibly proud of her. I hope this campaign raises awareness for other people."
