Twickenham runner to tackle London Marathon dressed as purple elephant
By Nub News Reporter 7th Apr 2026
A Twickenham charity supporter is set to turn heads at this year's London Marathon as he takes on the 26.2-mile challenge dressed as a giant purple elephant.
Matthew Fullalove will be running the marathon in aid of The Purple Elephant Project, a local charity supporting children and families facing mental health challenges across Twickenham and the surrounding area.
The costume is a deliberate choice, aimed at raising awareness as well as funds.
By running as a purple elephant, Fullalove hopes to spark conversations about children's mental health and highlight the vital work the charity provides locally.
So far, his fundraising campaign has raised £1,800 towards a £2,500 target, helping to fund therapy sessions and support services for young people and their families.
Fullalove said he was inspired to take part after hearing about the charity's impact over a number of years.
"I am running for this amazing charity because it has made a big impression on me through powerful stories of its therapeutic work and the huge impact it has on young people," he said.
"I have heard about the charity over many years, through my mum's work and her friendship with the charity's CEO, Jenny Haylock.
"With a love of running and the uplifting community spirit that comes with fundraising, I think that running for something bigger than yourself is one of the best feelings."
He added: "Supporting The Purple Elephant Project and knowing you are helping young people and their families makes it even more meaningful for me.
"Dedication, enthusiasm and perseverance are exactly what The Purple Elephant Project hopes to inspire in others
"I have therefore decided to run this marathon with the additional challenge of wearing a large purple elephant costume.
The London Marathon takes place on Sunday 26 April, with tens of thousands of runners expected to take part.
Fullalove is encouraging local residents to support his efforts by cheering him on along the route or donating to help the charity continue its work.
