Twickenham's Sea Cadet unit has won the coveted Canada Trophy, which is awarded each year to the Sea Cadet unit considered to have attained the highest standard in the UK.

The Twickenham unit had already been named as the best in the London Area (of 47 units) for 3 years running, before going on to beat competition from over 450 Sea Cadet units nationwide, winning the top UK prize for the first time in the unit's 92-year history.

As Canada Trophy holders, aside from bragging rights, the Twickenham cadets are now permitted by the Royal Navy to fly the Vice Admiral's Flag of the Second Sea Lord (second most senior officer in the Navy).

This can now be seen flying proudly at the top of the unit's riverfront mainmast at its premises off Broom Road in Teddington.

It will remain up for the rest of the year. The unit, named Training Ship (TS) Saumarez through historical naval links with the Twickenham area, is led by Commanding Officer Martyn Mayger. a full-time Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy who volunteers his spare time to run Twickenham unit.

He also attended the unit as a cadet himself, having grown up in Hanworth.

Ahead of the official Canada Trophy handing-over ceremony, which is expected in the coming months, Martyn said: "I am absolutely delighted for the cadets and voluntary staff at TS Saumarez.

"To be named as the leading Sea Cadet unit in London is one thing, but to be named best in the UK is just the most amazing tribute to their collective enthusiasm, hard work and dedication."

He added: "Being situated on the Thames with a fleet of sailing, motor, and rowing boats gives our cadets unrivalled opportunities to learn new skills and friendships, gain qualifications and have fun along the way.

"Our doors are always open to new cadets, so if you are aged 10 to 18 and looking to gain new life skills through nautical-based adventure, why not join the best unit in the country?"
