Yesterday around 15,000 first-dose vaccinations were provided across ten hours at Twickenham Stadium in what is believed to have been England's biggest walk-in vaccination event.

Thousands queued up in the Bank Holiday sunshine in a line snaking around the outside of the stadium, through the doors and around the pitch before reaching the vaccine centre in the concourse.

We've seen the news reports, but what was it like at the stadium?

Nub News Journalist Issy Millett attended the stadium for her first jab.

She said: "I'm hugely grateful to have received my first dose and just so impressed at how smooth the system is.

"The rollout's obviously being going superbly, but to save from being disappointed I stuck to a 'don't expect a jab before August' timeline.

"It's hard not to feel a quite immense sense of national pride at what's been and continues to be achieved."

Issy heard about the event from her dad, who had received a message about it from a friend yesterday morning.

She said: "I arrived at 10.45am and was walking out of the stadium by 11.40. The queue looked long when I joined but it was moving almost constantly.

"It was calm and ordered, but kindly, not even vaguely officious.

"Though there was none of the fun party atmosphere of game day, walking into the stadium had the same, familiar sense of excitement of going to see England."

Organisers initially offered the jab to all aged 30 and over, and aimed to encourage residents and anyone who is homeless or undocumented to attend, as booking ahead was not necessary. It was also targeted at residents in current hotspots for the India variant, such as Hounslow.

The NHS then announced that it had opened up to all aged 18 and over and queues quickly formed as younger people rushed to get in line. It was also opened up to those from all boroughs to ensure no vaccines were wasted.

Those waiting for their first doses were offered the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination.

Like many others in their twenties, Issy rushed over to Twickenham from Clapham to get in line though not quite believing the news that her age group could get a jab.

She said: "The majority of people in the queue seemed in their twenties, which was a relief to see!

"I'd been debating with my Dad whether the event was definitely open to under 30s - he was adamant the whole vaccination programme had been opened to under 30s and as I personally hadn't read that news, I arrived uneasy with the thought I might be skipping ahead of other age groups.

"I felt better when I saw people definitely young enough to be TikTok famous!"

And how was her vaccine experience? "From start to finish, the process was utterly painless, she said.

"NHS staff seemed in good spirits – from what Pauline who inoculated me said, I think they're delighted by what jabbing young people means in terms of milestones reached."

The gates closed to walk-ins at 6.45pm due to the high demand.

Yesterday's event was a one-off drive and the organisers have said they are not currently planning another.

In England, those aged over 30 are being called to book a vaccination at their local centre.
