Twickenham's Church Street has featured in 'The Great Escaper' as a picturesque French Rue.

The film stars Sir Micheal Caine and Glenda Jackson.

It follows Bernie's (Micheal Cain) adventure as he staged a "great escape" from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.

Spanning a mere 48 hours, it also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson).

Cllr Gareth Robers, leader of the council said: "For production companies looking to capture picture postcard London, Richmond upon Thames is the place, and it's particularly wonderful for Twickenham to be associated with a film starring Sir Michael given that he filmed Alfie in our very own York House nearly sixty years ago."

He added: "Our beautiful, leafy borough makes it the perfect backdrop for high-quality cinema and TV – while also being a boost to our local economy. Fans of the film will come to see the locations, but stay for the shops, bars, and restaurants. That investment has a really positive impact on the independent traders in the area at a time when businesses need it most."

The film is in cinemas now.
