Twickenham’s Tory Parliamentary candidate calls for World Cup boycott

By The Editor 21st Nov 2022

Twickenham's Tory candidate for the next general election has dismissed taking the knee and wearing armbands as 'virtue signalling'.

Emma Ware, who was selected earlier this year, has suggested that England and other nations need to go further and boycott the World Cup in Qatar.

Writing on Twitter ahead of England's first game against Iran, she said: "We have replaced principles with virtue signalling and empty gestures.

"Burning cash, taking a knee, wearing an armband all totally ineffectual."

Calling for a boycott, she said: "We correctly boycotted SA during apartheid. Taking a stand requires us to suffer a detriment or take a risk."

Miss Ware posted her comment alongside an image of Harry Kane wearing the One Love armband. The team were ordered by Fifa not to wear the armband just hours before the kick-off.
