The Mayor of London's ULEZ scrappage scheme extensions begins today, ahead of zone expansions from 29th August.

The scrappage scheme is a £160m pot of money that will be used to provide grant payments to applicants to scrap or retrofit their vehicles if they do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards

The scheme will allow anyone who lives in London to access up to £2,000 to replace cars that are non compliant with ULEZ.

It also means that there will be more support for businesses, charities, and disabled drivers.

Cllr Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said: "8 months ago Richmond Council called on the Mayor of London to expand the ULEZ scrappage scheme so more Richmond upon Thames residents could be helped financially to make the transition to cleaner cars.

"This call was echoed by councils and groups across London. Unfortunately, the Mayor did not heed these calls, meaning many local residents had no option other than to scrap their cars with no financial support."

He added: "While this last-minute change of heart is welcome, it has come far too late for many residents.

"Widening the criteria, so that anybody with a non-compliant vehicle can access the scrappage scheme, just a week before ULEZ is set to come into force will bring little comfort to those who have already changed their vehicle and lost out financially."
