Monty Panesar helps Twickenham to victory in first match for the club

Ex-England cricketer Monty Panesar helped Twickenham Cricket Club to victory yesterday in his first match since joining the club.

Twickenham CC beat Teddington CC by 21 runs at Bushy Park in what was the last 16 MCCL/ECB T20 clash between the two teams.

Dan Hough said in his match report: "His first ball was a wide, but with that out of the way Panesar teased a false shot out of the dangerous Josh Knappett as Teddington slipped to 26-3.

"The pendulum was to firmly swing in Twickenham's direction when Panesar had Rhythem Bedi caught at long off by Talbot and then Will Greenall very well snaffled by Blake van der Linde at long on.

"The Ts were firmly in the box seat."

Panesar, "one of England's finest spinners", has 167 test wickets and is widely known for his dazzling dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar in 2012, and a famous last stand against Australia in Cardiff in 2009.

Club Captain Paul Johnson said of his appointment: "We're overjoyed to have Monty with us.

"On the field and off the field he's a great addition to the team."

Panesar is currently studying an MA in Sports Journalism at St Mary's College and plans to become a broadcast journalist.

He is also helping to develop junior cricketers at Twickenham CC, helping out with coaching and player development as well as trying to bring more people in and around TW2 into the game.

Panesar's first league outing with the club will be at Richmond on Saturday May 8.
