Church Street biltong favourite to relocate

A Church Street biltong shop has announced it is moving from its current location at the end of this month.

Pierre Du Preez hopes to open his new Limpopo Biltong shop a few doors down on Church Street a few weeks later, on June 23.

The move comes after Du Preez managed to double his busines over the last year.

He said: "I have been so busy I need a bigger space!

"We have been talking about moving for a while but I needed to find a new venue."

He will close the current shop, which he sublets from Ricardo's Cellar, on May 30.

Du Preez certainly plans to make his new shop his own.

He plans to suspend a huge mirror ball from the ceiling and will expand his current range of South African products.

He also plans to convert the window into a hatch so he can serve customers outside, like he currently does at Ricardo's.

Du Preez hails from South Africa but has lived in the UK for the past 25 years.

He has had the shop for two years, following a career in the city as a banker.

After falling upon hard times, Pierre left his job in the city. He found his way some years later to Limpopo Biltong, where he helped out with the Kings Cross and Hackney market stalls.

"They saw something in me and offered me the shop in Twickenham," he says.

"It's a motivational story - when things look bad, you just have to persevere."

Now he is part of the Church Street community and couldn't be happier.

"I moved down from Bethnal Green and I have made wonderful friends, now I am part of a community in Church Street," he said.

"Church Street is just the most wonderful community.

"It doesn't feel like work to me here.

"Every day is a laugh."

Pierre lives along the river and his commute is a breezy 20-minute walk which he loves.

The shop sells biltong made by Francois Van Der Zee in Ashford and sliced fresh on site in Twickenham. The meat is all locally sourced from the UK.

"Francois needs credit because the product is only as good as the person who makes it!" says Du Preez.

And it is seriously good.
