UPDATE: Vigil to take place on Twickenham Green to remember lives lost

A vigil is being held in Twickenham this weekend to remember the lives lost due to violence against women.

It starts at 6pm on Saturday on the green in honour of Sarah Everard, 33, who went missing while walking home from a friend's house in Clapham. A serving Met Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Residents have been invited to come along with a light and gather at Arthur's on the Green where a minute's silence will begin at 6.15pm.

The event was organised by three local women in partnership with the organisers of the Reclaim These Streets vigil which is being held at the same time on Clapham Common.

They said: "We believe that streets should be safe for women, regardless of what you wear, where you live or what time of day or night it is. We shouldn't have to wear bright colours when we walk home and clutch our keys in our fists to feel safe.

"It's wrong that the response to violence against women requires women to behave differently. In Clapham, police told women not to go out at night this week. Women are not the problem.

"We've all been following the tragic case of Sarah Everard over the last week. This is a vigil for Sarah, but also for all women who feel unsafe, who go missing from our streets and who face violence every day."

In 2004, French student Amélie Delagrange was murdered on Twickenham Green by Levi Bellfield, who remains in jail.

A Facebook event for Saturday's vigil has been set up if you'd like to show you will be attending.
