King Street buildings demolished as Twickenham Riverside regeneration continues
By Cesar Medina 26th Jan 2026
Demolition work at Twickenham Riverside has reached a major milestone, with the former retail units on King Street now fully demolished, marking another step forward in the long-awaited regeneration of the area.
The clearance of the King Street buildings forms part of the wider Twickenham Riverside project, which aims to create a new civic heart for the town.
Demolition of the remaining structures on site, including the old swimming pool buildings and former café, is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
Richmond Council and construction partner Kier say a strong emphasis has been placed on sustainability during the works, with around 95% of demolition materials set to be recycled or reused.
Measures are also in place to minimise disruption, including real-time monitoring of dust, noise and vibration. Access for residents to the riverside is being maintained throughout the demolition phase.
Once demolition is fully complete, final site clearance will take place, allowing main construction work to begin next month.
The regeneration scheme will deliver a range of new public and community-focused features, including landscaped public spaces with terraced lawns, gardens, children's play areas and riverside seating.
Plans also include 45 new homes, incorporating affordable housing, alongside new shops, a café and flexible community spaces.
The project will also improve how people move through the area, with better pedestrian and vehicle connections between King Street, Wharf Lane, Water Lane and the riverside, helping to better link Twickenham town centre with the Thames.
