A new automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) camera has been installed on a School Street in Twickenham.

Clifden Road has been a School Street since September 28, meaning it is a purely pedestrian and cycling zone between 7.45 - 9.15am and 2 - 3.30pm Monday to Friday in term time.

The new ANPR camera will ensure that traffic adheres to the restrictions at school time. Vehicles entering the street during off-limit hours without having applied for an exemption will receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

If you need an exemption you can register for one here.

Exemptions can be requested for:

- Residents and businesses within the School Street (up to 2 vehicles per address)

- Blue badge holders visiting a property in the School Street

- Care workers serving a property within the School Street

- Taxis (private hire) serving a property within the School Street

- Emergency vehicles, Council waste trucks, school buses and school transport and taxis (Hackney carriages only) serving properties in the School Street will be exempt.

Retractable barriers and marshal management are used to close many School Streets. ANPR cameras are a permanent solution in some areas.

Where do Clifden Road School Street restrictions apply?

The Clifden Road restrictions run from the junction with Heath Road to the junction with Station Road.

The School Street also operates along Copthall Gardens from the junction with Holly Road to the junction with Clifden Road, and Station Road/Staten Gardens/Lion Road from the junction with Sherland Road to the junction with Grove Avenue and Tudor Gardens.

What are School Streets?

A School Street is where a road(s) around a school temporarily closes to all motor vehicles except those of the immediate road residents; thereby becoming a pedestrian and cycle zone during the school's opening and closing times.

They ensure a safer space for children around their school, contribute to reduced local pollution and encourage parents and children to opt for sustainable travel methods, like walking and cycling.
