New data from Zoopla shows that the average house in Richmond upon Thames now costs £760,700, meaning aspiring homeowners need a salary of £135,200 to get on the property ladder.

This means that buyers will need to be earning more than three and a half times the UK's average salary of £37,430, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This figure was calculated based on the assumption that buyers save a 20% deposit and take out a mortgage of 4.5 times their household income. For Richmond, that works out to a deposit of roughly £152,100.

While Richmond is not London's most expensive borough, with Kensington and Chelsea topping the list with an average house price of over £1.1 million, it still ranks among the more expensive parts of the capital.

The average London house costs £559,161, meaning Richmond sits well above the city-wide average in terms of both price and salary requirement.

Those looking to buy in other parts of London face an even steeper price range. In Westminster, you would need a salary of £166,600, while Barking and Dagenham is the most affordable borough, requiring a salary of £59,600.

Overall, Richmond ranks as the fourth most expensive borough in London, so renting continues to be the only realistic option for many residents.
