RFU applies for new Allianz Stadium licence to expand events beyond rugby

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has submitted an application for a new premises licence at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham, potentially paving the way for an expanded calendar of events at the venue beyond rugby.
Formerly the Twickenham Stadium, the home of English rugby could soon host a broader range of public events under the proposed licence, including live music, film screenings, theatrical performances, indoor sporting events, and even weddings or banquets, both indoors and outdoors.
The application, lodged with Richmond Council is currently open for public representation until Monday 30 June 2025.
If approved, the new licence would permit the following activities every day of the week from 10am to 11pm (with extended hours under certain conditions):
- Performance of plays
- Exhibition of films
- Indoor sporting events
- Boxing/wrestling
- Live and recorded music
- Dance performances
- Supply of alcohol (on and off premises)
The application outlines three categories of use:
Category A – Major sporting events in the stadium bowl:
- Licensable activities may continue up to 2.5 hours after an event ends or until 11pm, whichever is earlier.
- Hospitality suites/boxes may operate from 8am to 1am (midnight on Sundays).
Category B – Music concerts and major non-sporting events:
- Activities would conclude by 10:30pm (with potential extension to 10:40pm subject to council approval).
- Hospitality areas could remain open until 1am.
Category C – Private and corporate functions such as weddings, conferences, and Christmas parties:
- Licensable activity would typically finish by 11pm outdoors, and 1am indoors, with up to 36 indoor events per year allowed to run as late as 2am.
The RFU also seeks permission to sell alcohol during all events, with the same closing times applying depending on the event category.
In addition, the entire premises could remain open daily from 7am to 11:30pm, and later for hospitality use on select occasions.
For example, hospitality areas could remain open until 1:30am, and until 2:30am on up to 36 occasions per year, depending on the event.
Residents wishing to comment on the application can do so by submitting representations to the licensing authority by 30 June 2025.
