A Twickenham gym has celebrated a strong showing at this year's London Winter Turf Games, with 30 members competing across five teams.

Zenith Fitness Twickenham entered teams in both the Everyday and Intermediate categories, marking a major milestone for many of its members, many of whom are in their 40s and had never previously considered entering a fitness competition.

Turf Games sees mixed teams of six take on a series of high-intensity functional fitness challenges, combining strength, endurance and teamwork.

For participants from the Twickenham-based gym, coaches said the event was as much about the journey as the competition itself.

Tom Bohling, personal trainer and co-owner of Zenith Fitness, said: "Having something to train for makes a huge difference.

"Whether it's Turf Games or another event, setting a goal gives structure and motivation. It turns training into a shared mission."

Investing in specialist equipment

Following their first Turf Games experience in 2025, the gym invested in one of the competition's most demanding pieces of kit — the Worm.

Used in team events, the Everyday division Worm weighs 85kg and requires three athletes to carry it in unison, while the Intermediate version weighs 120kg and is lifted by four competitors.

The equipment is rarely found in standard commercial gyms.

The investment appeared to pay off, with the Worm station, regarded as one of the toughest elements of the day, proving to be one of Zenith's strongest performances this year.

Official HYROX partner

Zenith Fitness is also an official HYROX training partner, with members regularly competing in events across the UK and overseas.

The gym runs two dedicated HYROX classes each week, alongside two additional competition training sessions designed to prepare members for events such as Turf Games.

Facilities include three official HYROX sleds and six wall ball targets.

However, co-owner Sandra Bohling stressed that competition is only one part of the gym's offering.

She said: "We're incredibly proud of the members who compete, but we also recognise that competition isn't for everyone — and it doesn't need to be."

Classes for all ages

Zenith runs 45 classes per week, including strength training and high-intensity sessions.

Specialist classes are available for new mums, where babies are welcome, children aged 10 to 15, and a recently launched over-60s class aimed at improving strength, mobility and confidence later in life.

All sessions are led by qualified personal trainers, with coaches guiding members through technique and progression rather than leaving them to train independently.

For many members who joined simply looking to improve their fitness, the competitive side of the gym has become an unexpected bonus, alongside the friendships built along the way.

Next up for the team is the Summer Turf Games in June, set to take place locally at Grasshoppers Rugby Club in Isleworth.
