A historic boathouse in Twickenham could be demolished to make way for three new houses.

The Boathouse Twickenham Ltd and Nomad Property Ltd have submitted a planning application to flatten the building on Ranelagh Drive to build the four-bed homes.

Previous applications to redevelop the site have been put forward and subsequently withdrawn, but the joint applicants say this latest scheme would enhance the riverside area.

"The proposal includes significant public realm and public benefits which will positively transform this area of the Thames path and conservation area," the application explained.

"By contributing a strip of the site area to the Thames Path, the opportunity has been taken to widen the path.

"The design has been informed over a period of time through consultants collaboration, statutory and public consultation and now represents a high quality proposal that responds to previous technical and aesthetic issues raised."

Originally used as a boat building site - once home to Simms Boatyard - the Boathouse was converted in the 1960's to become a recording studio.

But this latest application could see it replaced with a row of modern new homes.

"The proposal will deliver a building which responds positively to the conservation area and which has clear references to the proximity of the site to the lock, the Thames path and wall along Ranelagh Drive," the application continues.
