Plans have been submitted for a new beer garden set across two floors at the back of Wetherspoons in Twickenham town centre.

The terrace which would face onto Garfield Road, near Twickenham Library and Pizza Express, would be open until 10pm.

"J D Wetherspoon is seeking planning permission to construct a beer garden terrace on the roof of their existing premises, The William Webb Ellis in Twickenham," the application says.

"Part of the proposals involve replacing the mechanical services plant which is currently located on the roof.

"The area would be enclosed on all sides and incorporate large areas of solid canopy roofing in order to maximise the screening benefits."

Wetherspoons has carried out an assessment of predicted noise levels which could result if the terrace is built.

It considered three scenarios: normal trading, 'busy summer weekend evening' and worst case peak trading levels.

The application says: "For all of the simulated trading scenarios, noise levels from patrons on the proposed beer garden terrace would exceed WHO guideline level at the nearest noise sensitive receptor locations, except for the dwellings at Sandringham Court, where noise levels would not exceed the WHO (World Health Organisation) guideline level.

"However, pre-existing ambient noise levels are significantly higher than the WHO advised guideline level."

It concludes: "Use of the beer garden terrace would not result in any significant noise impact."

The application will be determined by Richmond Council.

Wetherspoons' 872 pubs are currently closed but chairman Tim Martin is hopeful of "a return to more normal trading patterns in the spring and summer".
