Work to repair a damaged gas pipe in Fulwell which led to the area being placed under police cordon is ongoing this week.

Gas could be smelt around Fulwell Golf Club after the incident on Monday morning and residents reported being told to remain in their homes.

Twickenham Nub News understands the leak happened as a result of an accident while ditch drainage works were being carried out at the golf course.

A mechanical excavator struck gas distribution company SGN's pipe, causing the leak.

SGN spokesperson Dan Brown said: "We were called to support the emergency services at Fulwell Golf Club on Monday morning following third party damage to our gas network.

"Our engineers have since repaired our damaged gas pipe and we remain on site carrying out a series of reinstatement works and safety checks.

"We expect to complete these and clear our site by Thursday evening."
