Oktoberfest

Watch out for people in lederhosen and other traditional German garb, who are a little the worse for wear, attending Oktoberfest at the Richmond Athletic Ground.

Organisers promise live Oompah bands, traditional food, entertainers, DJs and, of course, steins of German beer.

The, usually, raucous and drink-fuelled sessions begin on Thursday (Sept 30), from 5pm-11pm, and will be repeated on both Friday and Saturday evenings.

Japan Festival

For those whose idea of relaxation is more contemplative, a Japan Festival begins at Kew Gardens this weekend, featuring stunning large-scale artistic and horticultural installations along with live music, theatre and dance.

The event will be based in the majestic Temperate House, which is the world's largest surviving Victorian glasshouse, with over 10,000 plants.

The Festival begins on Saturday and runs through to October 31.
