Supermarket chain, Aldi, has lodged an application to the council to confirm whether Homebase in Twickenham Road, Hanworth is a 'Class E' unit which allows for various commercial activities.

Although DIY store Homebase went into administration in November 2024, CDS Superstores—the owner of The Range and Wilko—bought the Homebase brand and up to 70 stores from Hilco.

However, this application by Avison Young on behalf of Aldi, to Richmond Council suggests that the supermarket chain may be eyeing the Hanworth site.

Aldi is seeking a Certificate of Lawfulness to confirm that the existing Homebase store in Twickenham falls under 'Class E' of planning use.

The supermarket chain argue that since there are no conditions restricting the type of goods sold, Aldi can lawfully use the site for their supermarket without needing new planning permission.

One resident who commented on the application was "thrilled" at the potential of Homebase being turned into an Aldi store.

Similarly, another resident welcomed the proposal as it could mean having an Aldi nearby.

They said: "We like to shop at Aldi. We live near Twickenham Green. Currently, the nearest Aldi stores are at Feltham and Hounslow.

"We would be very happy to shop at Aldi on the old Homebase site."

Back in October 2024, an application to turn 12 parking spaces at Hanworth's Homebase into a car wash was withdrawn.

Homebase and Aldi have been approached for comment.
