Richmond Council has congratulated all A-Level and GCSE students following the receipt of their results this week in what has been an extraordinary two years for pupils across the country.

Many exams and assessments were cancelled this year and teachers awarded students' grades based on their work - many took mock exams under full exam conditions, which were used as part of the final assessment.

One Twickenham principal described the extreme difficulties faced by pupils this year, saying: "This cohort has suffered more educational disruption than any other since the second world war".

Cllr Penny Frost, Richmond Chair of the Education and Children's Services Committee, said: "I would like to offer my congratulations to all those who have received results this week and wish everyone the best for the future in these uncertain times.

"Our young people have been through a uniquely difficult period of their education – constantly having to adapt to lockdowns, remote learning, and changes to their school and social lives. As well as education challenges, many of them will have struggled with their mental wellbeing during this time.

"I'm extremely proud of the way they have overcome these challenges and the results we have seen this week are a well-deserved recognition of their resilience and hard work.

"I would also like to offer my thanks to all our schools, teachers, parents and everyone else who has supported our young people to achieve so much during the past year and a half."
