Quilting for beginners

Join us for a wonderful day of creativity learning the basics of patchwork and quilting.

During the workshop, experienced local tutor Emma Randall will teach you how to rotary cut and piece blocks of fabric and then put them together to make either a small lap quilt or a table runner. You'll then quilt it using some basic quilting designs and finish the project by adding the binding.

We have sewing machines to use during the class (for a small fee of £10), though we do recommend that you bring your own machine if you have one, to help you to familiarise yourself with it better.

You'll need 2.5m of different fabrics (ideally 100% cotton) -1m for the bigger blocks, 1m for half the smaller blocks and the border and then 50cm for the other half of the smaller blocks. You'll also need 1.2m square of both wadding and backing fabric for the quilt, or 1.5m by 50cm of both wadding and backing fabric for the table runner. We'll have wadding and a selection of backing fabrics available to buy on the day, or feel free to bring along your own.

We'll also be serving lots of coffee, tea and homemade cake to help your creativity and there'll be a break for lunch, when you can either eat a packed lunch or treat yourself at one of the many cafes in Teddington.

Emma Randall is a prolific quilter having made over 200 quilts in the last fifteen years! Emma loves sharing her passion and has been teaching a variety of patchwork and quilting techniques and patterns on both day courses and retreats to all levels of students for over 7 years.
